Chapter Fifteen

“You look so happy today.” Joan patted Vivian’s hand. “You must be sleeping well.”

“I am.” Vivian had planned lunch with her mother that afternoon, not knowing that she was going to have to fight glowing cheeks from Richard-induced relaxation.

Their talk had been very… illuminating. And she’d been happy to find out Richard was highly dexterous. The hands that wielded a financial sword were also skilled in other areas.

Very excellent areas.

Vivian felt like she was glowing from the inside. “Thanks, Mom. I feel good.” No, she felt great, but she didn’t want to tell her mother why. “How about you?” She reached over and squeezed her mother’s hand. “You said this diagnosis was what you were expecting, but now it’s confirmed.”

“You know? I’m okay. Like you said, it was what I expected, so I feel mentally prepared. And relieved to know what’s going on.”

The blood work and MRI her new doctor had ordered did indicate that Joan had probably experienced a ministroke sometime in the past month. There was slight damage to her temporal lobe that could have easily affected her memory, and while the damage wasn’t necessarily permanent, it was a concern because any stroke could be the prelude to a major event.

“What did Dr. Patil recommend? Does she want to do more tests?”

“Not right now. I’m starting the new blood pressure medication this week, and weekly cocktails at mahjong are going to be a thing of the past. She mainly wanted me to be more intentional about exercise. Walking is good, but I need to step it up.”

“Have you thought about swimming? The club’s pool is beautiful, and they have lap-swimming hours.”

“I’ll probably do that. It’s too hot out here to do anything else.” Joan laughed a little. “Though if I could get invitations to fancy country clubs like Monte Verde like your father, I might take up golf.”

Vivian blinked. “Excuse me?”

“Didn’t your friend Richard tell you?” Joan started on her salad. “Such a nice man. We ran into him at Jensen’s yesterday. Your dad was getting me my favorite cake and your friend walked over. He said he recognized your dad from the practice.”

“Oh.” Vivian’s brain scrambled. “Yes, he’s been by the office before.” And he knew her mother’s favorite cake. “So… what did you say about Monte Verde?”

“He and your father started talking golf, golf, golf.” Joan waved a hand. “You know how your he gets. Anyway, Richard mentioned he was looking for a fourth for a round this morning, so that’s where your father is today.”

“And this was last night that you ran into him at the market?”

“Yes, when you were meeting your hippy friend, remember? We asked you if you wanted anything from Jensen’s.” Joan took a bite of her chicken salad. “Such a nice man. You’ve made the loveliest group of friends here in town.

“Uh-huh.” So Richard had known he was taking her father for a round of golf when his hands were doing all sorts of relaxing things to her the night before.
